Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these medications must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
